Emily Carr: On the Edge of Nowhere

Victoria Collects: The Salish Weave Collection

Date: January 6, 2012 - May 6, 2012

Curated by Mary Jo Hughes
Drury Gallery

The Salish Weave Collection, as part of the Victoria Collects exhibition, demonstrates that a passion for the art of our region can translate beyond amassing and decorating to sharing and educating. Focusing exclusively on works by contemporary Coast Salish artists, George and Christiane Smyth dream of seeing this unique art with its distinct and traditional forms, recognized and appreciated worldwide in a similar way as Northwest Coast art. They have lent and donated far and wide to promote to a broader audience the work of artists such as Susan Point, lessLIE, and Luke Marston.

The Enduring Arts of China

Founders Gallery Dec 2 - May 6
|and| Pollard Gallery Dec 9 - April 29

In Chinese art, there was a high degree of continuity in the range of decorative elements used in the creation of art through successive dynasties.  A wide range of motifs and decorative compositions in use have been passed down through the centuries.

Throw Down

Sonny Assu, Gregory Ball, Megan Dickie, Tyler Hodgins, Alison MacTaggart

Date: January 27, 2012 - May 6, 2012

Curated by Nicole Stanbridge
The LAB & Centennial Galleries

To throw down can mean many things: to celebrate in a big way, to fight for something meaningful, or to contribute resources to make something happen. The overall spirit of throwing down is captured by the five B.C. artists selected for this exhibition. They use sculpture, video, photography, drawing and public intervention to address socio-political issues, economic struggles, to invoke a call to action or an invitation to play. Satire and humour are strategically used as a means of contemplation and critique of relevant issues within society. In addition to projects in the Galleries, a new public project by Tyler Hodgins, Sleeping Bag, will place his temporal sculptural interventions at various locations throughout the city during the run of the exhibition*. The exhibition includes a catalogue with contributions by Wendy Welch and Nicole Stanbridge.

William Kurelek

The Messenger

Date: May 25, 2012 - September 3, 2012

Throughout a career that spanned from mid-1950s until his death, William Kurelek (1927-1977) and his art have meant many different things to many people. The Alberta-born, Manitoba-raised artist was a painter of innocence and fun, his scenes reminiscences of a simpler and timeless past.
