Date:
August 13, 2010 - October 17, 2010

Working with historical narratives as a starting point for his work, Tremeer exposes the constructiveness of history through painting, installation and sculpture. His project for the LAB is inspired by H.G. Wells 1913 book Little Wars, which gave the readers a set of rules for playing war with toy soldiers. Within the gallery space Tremeer will create a panoramic mural drawn from 16th century woodblock prints. Stamps made by the artist depicting houses, trees, peasants, walls, mounted knights, tanks and animals, will be available in the space for visitors to use to contribute to the work. Tremeer anticipates that this format will allow the visitor to respond as they see fit; changing the balance of power or undermining the war illustration and focusing on creating pattern in a material response, not tactical. In addition to the mural Tremeer has also created and army of cutout paper soldiers that will be part of the installation but also available in the Gallery Shop for people to take home and assemble to recreate their own Little Wars.

Todd Tremeer studied at the Ontario College of Art & Design, received a BA at the University of Guelph and an MFA at the University of Western Ontario. He was the 2007 winner of the "Joseph Plaskett Award" for new Canadian painters.
